"Behold... Po'Pay!" Tile by Jason Garcia

Santa Clara artist Jason Garcia is fascinated with the juxtaposition of contemporary and Pueblo culture.

Rising above his oppressors in living color is Po’Pay, one of the named leaders of the Pueblo Revolt of 1680. Using an iconic image from the Silver Age of Marvel Comics, Garcia creates a vivid portrait of an equally iconic figure from Pueblo Indian history. With relevance to Native communities, comic fans and art collectors, Garcia reveals the rebellious appeal of comic and Native art.

Since his first showing of his "comic book covers" in 2008, they have become among his most iconic imagery. Each of the "covers" is based on the Pueblo Revolt of 1680 and the series is entitled, "Tewa Tales of Suspense". This tile, created from native clay and slips and fired traditionally, is entitled, "Behold... Po'Pay!"One of his first comic tiles continues in the traveling exhibition "Comic Art Indigene", which has been at the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C. Jason's innovative style and artwork in clay continues to make him one of the young leaders in Pueblo art.
