Tan and Red Carved Avanyu Pot by Nathan Youngblood

Acclaimed potter Nathan Youngblood is the grandson of legendary Santa Clara Pueblo pottery matriarch Margaret Tafoya (1904-2001). Nathan continues the family legacy of extraordinary pottery created using traditional methods. This pot is a classic example of his innovative tri-color style of pottery which includes a polished tan, matte tan, and polished red slipped surfaces for an incredibly striking appearance. The tan polished area is technically the most difficult color to achieve in Santa Clara pottery as no slip is used, only water, and then it is stone polished. After a piece is fired Nathan then scrapes down the background area and sides of the carving to create the visual contrast between the matte and polished surfaces. The beautifully carved central area features Nathan's interpretation of the traditional water serpent design and is red to create further contrast.
