Santa Clara Pueblo Wedding Vase by Tina Diaz

Santa Clara Pueblo ceramicist Tina Diaz is known for her high quality and innovative style. She is the daughter of noted potter Mary Cain and granddaughter of Christina Naranjo.

As shown in this wedding vase, Tina has skillfully created her own unique style of carving pottery in which she creates a lyrical flow of imagery around the piece. It is technically difficult to carve such sharp angles and delicate edges into the clay. Tina also rounds out her background area instead of keeping it flat like most other potters. Additionally, she is one of only a handful of Santa Clara potters who has mastered the technique of polishing her pottery tan. The tan is the natural color of the clay and the most difficult to polish to achieve a high shine.

The wedding vase is a traditional form used by Pueblo potters. It requires great skill to create the delicate balanced design of the spouts and bridge.
