Dorthy Torivio Large Jar with Hand Painted Geometric Design

Dorthy Torivio is known as one of Acoma’s finest potters, and was a leader in introducing the “op-art” style to Pueblo pottery. Her abstract pots were hand-coiled using traditional methods and painted free hand with a yucca brush. She began creating repetitive geometric designs on her work in the early 1980’s, and is celebrated around the world for this innovative direction. Dorthy painted her hypnotic patterns according to the shape of the vessel, magnifying the optical illusion and giving her pieces intoxicating movement and intrigue. Dorthy Torivio passed away in 2011 and will always be remembered for her intense skill, creativity and compassion.
