Frank Patania Sterling Silver Cuff Links with Natural Turquoise Nuggets
Exhibiting his extraordinary ability to design sophisticated, yet sensual jewelry, these sterling silver cuff links with natural turquoise nuggets by Frank Patania are a refined example of his immaculate work. Raw sky blue stones are bezel set against an oxidized background and framed with polished parallel lines, emitting a distinguished appeal.
Born in Messina, Italy in 1899, at the age of six Frank Patania was apprenticed to a goldsmith where he was assigned mundane tasks to be repeated until they were mastered. When he mastered one task, he was assigned another, learning two valuable lessons: one must have a masters’ understanding of every aspect of the craft, and second, the discipline to put that mastery to work. Frank moved with his family to New York City at the age of 10 and by age 19 he was a jewelry designer for Goldsmith, Stern and Company. In 1924 he contracted tuberculosis and moved to Santa Fe to recover. Upon seeing the American Southwest for the first time, he knew immediately he did not want to return to the East coast. Falling in love the the Native American style of silver and turquoise jewelry, Frank found the medium in which he wanted to design and opened a small shop in Santa Fe. He remained in the Southwest for the remainder of his life creating beautiful works, and sharing influence with the most skilled artisan of the time.
