In 1938, the Museum of Northern Arizona introduced a program to teach Hopi artists the silver overlay technique, in which they could reproduce their pottery designs. This allowed Hopi jewelers to break away from the earlier Navajo approach and designs. The pottery design on this box was executed by Paul Saufkie using this process.
