Zuni Polychrome Dough Bowl with Exterior and Interior Painted Geometric Designs, ca. 1920’s
In wonderful condition for a piece of historic pottery, this Zuni polychrome dough bowl circa 1920’s features exterior and interior hand painted geometric designs. The interior symbolism speaks of the sun, rain and fields of crops; the exterior designs symbolize feather caps alongside steppes. No cracks or chips are present, only natural wear of the painted surface. The bowl is slipped in traditional fashion with cream-colored clay, over which is painted the design in mineral and vegetal paints. The underbody is slipped in black, a tradition starting in the mid-1860s and continued to today.
