Fred Harvey style silver jewelry was commercially manufactured from around 1900 to the 1950s. Originally advertised as native made, the pieces were made at the behest of western traders and curio shop owners. The jewelry offered tourists a distillation of Native American art in a wearable and affordable form. There were many repeating motifs such as arrows, horses/dogs, teepees, thunderbirds, snakes, and nohokos (whirling logs).
Many modern wearers continue to find new ways to wear and style these charming remnants from the days when easterners first explored the west and its venerable cultures by rail.
