In 1938, the Museum of Northern Arizona introduced a program to teach Hopi artists the silver overlay technique, in which they could reproduce their pottery designs. This allowed Hopi jewelers to break away from the earlier Navajo approach and designs. This larger box, showing a repeated motif in overlay, was entered by the Carl Luthy Shop in 1971 New Mexico State Fair, where it was awarded a blue ribbon.
